Hardcover. Condition: Fair. The cover has brown cloth. The content has issues from March 30, 1850-September 21, 1850. The bottom end of the last page states, "This day is Published, neatly Bound in Cloth, The First Volume of Household Words." The boards' corners and the top and bottom ends of the spine strip are frayed. About a third of the front gutter is split, and is now tipped back together with glue. The bottom end of the back gutter is thus. The front board has a 3/8 in. stain. The back board has several stains, up to 1/4 in. A missing cord of the front hinge has been replaced. The Contents page is chipped on all margins and on the top half of one column. The pages are tanned, most of them are a little wavy, and stains are sparse. Three pages each have a 3 1/2 in. closed tear. The endpapers have foxing. Scans e-mailed upon request.…

A charming surviving example of the Victorian Christmas and seasonal publishing tradition associated with Charles Dickens's celebrated weekly journal All the Year Round. Issued as the 1886 "Spring Extra Number", A Bunch of Spring Flowers was produced in the familiar enlarged pamphlet format intended for popular railway and parlour reading, combining illustrated advertisements with several pieces of light fiction and sentimental domestic literature. Although published more than fifteen years after Dickens's death, the periodical continued to trade prominently on his name and reputation, retaining the long-established wording "Conducted by Charles Dickens" on the wrappers and title page. The contents appear to comprise a sequence of connected stories or novellas including The Lady of Dis, Heart of Feather - Heart of Lead, One Day's Work, In the May Time, and The Orphan's Atonement. Particularly attractive here is the survival of the striking original printed wraps in red and green, together with the extensive Victorian advertisements for cocoa, patent medicines, household goods, watches, furnishings, and other commercial products, offering a vivid glimpse into late nineteenth-century popular print culture. Such ephemeral numbers were commonly discarded or later bound into collected volumes, making intact standalone copies increasingly uncommon today. A good copy of this periodical - scarce to find such a solo copy intact with its original covers as so many have been lost, or rebound into volumes. The yellow card covers are printed in red and green ink. They are a little soiled, and rather frayed and nibbled to edges. The interior text is clean and bright with a little wear in places - some creases to corners and a marginal loss to the top of the internal title page - the missing piece is still within the periodical and could be restored. Issue is complete. Some of the text page edges remain uncut. Text in English. On the second front blank page is a black and white Ex Libris bookplate with a photographic illustration of Francis Chichester with a bue ink signature of Francis Chichester underneath - I can only assume this copy of Dickens had a direct association with the world famous mariner. Book has a dark red leather spine and boards' corners, with gilt titles to spine. Rubs to spine-ends and to boards' corners. Boards are a mottled light brown and dark brown small pattern. On inside of front board is a round blank white sticker - 2 inches diameter. Pages very clean. Text in double columns. Also includes three first day covers - one postmarked 28th May 1967 with B&W line picture and Chichester Rouond the World Day of Arrival (envelope unopened with a blue Elizabeth II 4d stamp; stamped envelope with colour stamp with 1'9 stamp with postmark of Torquay 10,15 am 24 Jy 67 Devon ; Gipsy Moth IV Commerative Cover unopened envelope with colour picture of a man's head with mast and sail with moon to left and a colour stamp of 1'9 stamp with picture of boat and a B&W stamp of Francis Chichester, Pymouth Devon 24 July 1967 and a typed address to an unopened envelope now in protective plastic cover. There is also a blank B&W postcard of Gipsy Moth IV (photo by Eileen Ramsey) and produced by Francis Chichester Limited. This is being offered as a whole to keep the book and the Francis Chichester related items together.…
