Hardbound. Condition: Good. First Edition. This reader consists of 107 reading lessons in English and Chinese, each with a list of new vocabulary - a total of 1500 English words are introduced. The author provides reference material, such as a list of irregular verbs, a list of words of opposite meaning, abbreviations, letter fo…rmats, etc. at the rear of the volume, and as might be expected of the author and publishers, the English text includes significant Christian doctrine. The reader was designed for instruction of English to overseas Chinese, particularly from south China, as the Chinese text follows the Cantonese dialect. Binding good; spine a little worn. EPs missing; internal pages lightly toned but otherwise clean and unmarked. 144 pp., small b&w drawings scattered throughout. Size: 19 x 13 cm.

Solid binding with some edgewear, else Very Good to Near Fine volume (~ 750-800 pp) of the newspaper beginning with #1 dated 20 July 1870 (the day after the declaration of war on Prussia) and concluding with the… 25 February 1871 issue (after the end of the Franco-Prussian War and shortly preceding the Paris Commune). Most issues are 4pp (some 2pp); this volume assembles virtually every issue (the numbering is sometimes inconsistent). Part written by de Rodays, part Second Empire and Third Republic institutional communications, part communications between institutional or military authorities, European press reviews on the events of the time, mainly the Franco-Prussian War, European diplomatic relations, end of the Second Empire, German unifications, beginning and formation of the Third Republic. Tipped in is the 31 October 1870 (Number 32) issue of Brest's 'Le Telegraphe' devoted to the treason of Marechal Bazaine's surrender and printing Cremieux, Glais-Bizoin and Gambetta's 30 October Proclamation along with the statement of support addressed to General Keratry fom Sub-Prefect of Brest H. Caurant. de Rodays later was Editor-in-Chief of Le Figaro. Quite scarce, no issues offered and only one institutional holding (BNF) found as of December 2021.
