THE FIRM OF GIRDLESTONE. [Originally published under the title "The Firm of Girdlestone; A Romance of the Unromantic."]
Doyle, A. Conan [Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle], 1859-1930.

Contact seller5-star sellerEarly American reprint circa 1898. [2], 356 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 12.75cm. Original dark aquamarine/teal cloth with Art Nouveau-style green stamped ivy and wreath decoration upon front board, muted green stamping to spine with bright gilt lettering and gilt device at center; light staining at spine heel with stronger staining at adjacent bottom corners of boards; 1cm tear at spine head. Staining affects bottom gutter corners of interior leaves which, as usual for Lupton editions (and other American pirate publishers), are strongly toned throughout as a result of Lupton utilizing lower-grade paper; past owner's pencil inscription for Christmas 1898 on front free endpaper. Black top edge with toning to fore-edge and bottom edge. Binding is firm. Else a good+ copy and probably better than most Lupton books as survivors are almost always degraded by their original inexpensive manufacture. The book's title page states F.M. Lupton Publishing Company's address as 72-76 Walker Street in lower Manhattan which, according to an online reference, was the firm's location from 1894 to 1899 and thus correlates to the aforementioned dated inscription. THE FIRM OF GIRDLESTONE was first issued in 1890 by London publisher Chatto and Windus and was quickly reprinted in the United States by a number of copyright-evading American publishers.…
