Bound in old half light brown leather marbled boards lettered gilt at the spine with four raised bands and gilt lining - slight tanning at prelims otherwise very good with some slight fadding at spine but a decent sound clean copy.

Publisher's imprint stamped in blind to rear cover. Stated "Second Edition" on copyright page. Some wear to hinges, still sound. Faint shelf wear, bright gilt. Previous ownership bookplate to front endpaper, inscription to front free endpaper. Previous bookseller's label affixed to rear endpaper. Complete with all listed in-text illustrations, as well as frontispiece with tissue cover. Three fold-out maps, one in-text, two at rear. All are near fine with faint toning to edges. (Ferguson 9978). James Graham Goodenough (1830-1875) joined the Royal Navy at the age of fourteen and earned the rank of Commander-in-Chief of the Australia Station in 1873. Goodenough served until 1875 when he passed on aboard the HMS Pearl from infected poison arrow wounds after an attack by Santa Cruz Islands natives. Second edition of the Journal of Commodore Goodenough, compiled and edited by his wife Victoria Hamilton. (illustrator).
