Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Maria Sibylla Merian (illustrator). Limited edition, limited to 1000 copies, this is number 14. Produced by The Folio Society in 2006. 91 facsimile illustrations recreated from the Maria Sibylla Merian Collection in the British Museum, originally gifted to the museum by Sir Hans Sloane. Peter The Great also collected the works for The Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg. Quarter bound with green Nigerian goatskin leather to the spine, black leather title label lettered in gilt, cloth sides with a beautiful design by David Eccles, based on plate 38, in gilt, silver, and black, of Cancytius antaeus, or the Giant Sphinx Moth. Illustrations printed on high quality Furioso paper, which has a close appearance and feel to the original vellum that the illustrations were painted on. Printed at the Cambridge University Press and hand bound by Smith Settle, Yorkshire. Together with the commentary volume, bound in dark green cloth, printed on high quality laid paper, with an introduction by Julie Harvey of the Entomology Library at The British Museum, all housed in a buckram solander case with black leather gilt title label to the spine. Very large folio, the box measures 57x39.5x10.5cm. Weighing approximately 12kg. Maria Sibylla Merian was a pioneering naturalist and artist whose meticulous observations helped to transform our understanding of the natural world. At a time when insects were widely dismissed as "beasts of the devil" that spontaneously emerged from mud, she spent decades breeding and studying them. Her illustrations and research provided clear, documented evidence of metamorphosis, proving that caterpillars, cocoons, and butterflies were different stages of the same living creature. Her unique contribution to science was her ecological approach to illustration. While other artists of the 17th century drew specimens in isolation, Merian depicted insects alongside the specific plants they fed upon, effectively creating the first visual records of food chains and host-plant relationships. This holistic view of nature moved beyond simple classification toward an understanding of how different species interact within an ecosystem. At the age of 52, Merian shattered social norms by funding her own scientific expedition to Suriname in 1699, an unprecedented feat for a woman traveling without a male protector. During her two years in the South American rainforests, she documented exotic species and local indigenous knowledge. During this time she produced the 91 watercolour plates featuring here. She went on to write the book; Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, a work which included a number of the illustrations from this collection of watercolours. Today, she is celebrated as a "Mother of Biology" whose work laid the foundation for modern entomology and influenced the classification systems of Carl Linnaeus. Many naturalists have named new species in her honour, including three butterflies - Opsiphanes cassina merianae, Heliconius melpomene, and Catasticta sibyllae, plus The Cuban Sphinx moth, a shield bug, an orchid bee, two spiders, a genus of mantises, a lizard, a toad, and even a subspecies of African Stonechat birds, plus a genus of flowering plants; Meriania, found in Central and South America and the Caribbean, plus another flowering plant found in South Africa; Watsonia meriana. Condition - The books are in fine condition, the slipcase has a few scuffs and marks, and some bumping to the edges, very good. Also comes with the three loose prints housed in their original paper envelope in fine condition. Very large and heavy book which may require additional postage for some international locations (possibly cheaper for some others). Please feel free to contact me for further information.

The commentary volume by Julie Harvey includes a biographical study of Merian alongside detailed commentary on the plates. Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German entomologist, naturalist and scientific illustrator, renowned for her pioneering work on insect metamorphosis. At the age of 52 she travelled to Suriname, spending two years documenting its flora and fauna, much of which had not previously been scientifically recorded. This work resulted in 91 watercolour plates, the first sixty later published as engravings in Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. The watercolours reproduced in this facsimile are taken from the British Museum's collection, originally assembled by Sir Hans Sloane, and are presented in the same sequence as the original engravings.
