First English language edition hard back binding in publisher's original symmetrically decorated pine green cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back and front, charcoal black end papers, blind embossing to the rear board. 12mo. 7½'' x 5¼''. The period of Pheidias's greatest works is that which coincides with the administration of Pericles, when the sculptor was surrounded by a group of artists working under his direction - Aleamenes, Agoracritus, Cresilas, Colotes, Paeonius.
