4to. [12], 10, 5, [1], 134, [4], 4, 6, 6, [2], 7, [1], 6, 5, [1] pp. (some extra-paginated supplementary leaves), sections separated by thumb tab divider sheets. Including 100's of log brand illustrations. Black three-ring divider, manuscript spine label adhered by tape, still VG copy, w/ NF interior. First edition, thus, of this exceptionally scarce Log Brand manual recording the 100's of different brands used by logging and timber companies in the State of Washington in the Mid-20th Century, as required by law. Introduced originally, log brands were legislated in order to cut down on the high level of log piracy which thrived from the 1880's through World War I, with log pirates often stealing 100's of thousands of logs. State Log Patrol officers would investigate and levy penalties for dealing in "maverick" or unbranded logs, or in logs branded by another operator. Over the succeeding decades these helped to cut down on the notorious small and medium-sized mills operating with "hot" logs bought from log bootleggers. This log brand manual was issued after the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was created in 1957 with Bert Cole as director (1957-1981) and before Webster was replaced in 1967, and provides with the seven supplements issued from 1961-1967 an invaluable historical record of PNW logging and timber companies. No copies in Worldcat (Wash State Library records versions from 1972, 1974, and 1980's, and none with the Bert Cole & Webster attribution); See: Stewart Holbrook, Log Pirates of Puget Sound, American Forests (Jan., 1937), pp. 22-37.
