First Edition
First edition, first impression, of this scarce compilation of works by distinguished educationalists, accompanied by an autograph letter signed from one of the contributors, and with apt provenance: inscribed on the front free endpaper "Dickin Moore, Bryanston, 28.1.39"; Moore, a schoolmaster with experience in public and private schools, wrote The Maze of Schools (Bodley Head, 1950). The letter, from Alexander Sutherland Neill (1883-1973), is addressed to Moore on headed paper from Summerhill School, Suffolk, and dated 7 July 1958. Alexander Sutherland Neill (1883-1973) was a Scottish educator and author known for his school, Summerhill, and its philosophy of freedom from adult coercion and community self-governance. In the letter Neill writes regarding Homer Lane, who was a major influence on Neill and the ethos behind Summerhill School: "In a talk with Lytton at his Club not long after L's death I thought he was shocked when I asked him if it would make any difference to his opinion of Lane is it were proved that he actually did sleep with his patients. After a pause he said no but I felt that the thought was painful to him". The editor of this volume, Thorold Coade (1896-1963), was headmaster of Bryanston School in Dorset for much of his career (1932-1959). He developed "pioneering" at the school to augment sports, consisting of community-related activities, such as forestry in the extensive grounds of the school. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine in gilt. With dust jacket. A very good copy indeed, edges foxed, else clean, in the toned dust jacket, extremities rubbed, minor chip to foot of spine, tips nicked, unclipped.
