According to his entry in the Oxford DNB, Brandram - founder with Frank Talfourd of the Oxford Dramatic Society - 'was remembered as the most distinguished Shakespearian reciter of the period, influencing the productions of William Poel, and through his popular recitations familiarized middle-class families with Shakespeare'. 2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, with unobtrusive repair of closed tear with archival tape. He is 'dreadfully sorry to disappoint' him again, but he is 'not up to the mark': 'I still have, and I suppose always shall have, to be kept in order by frequent visits to my doctor and on Friday I underwent a little operation - nothing to compare of course to what I have been through but enough to knock one up and make one feel very uncomfortable for a day or two.' He hoped to be better on the day of writing, but is not fit to go out, and his wife will leave the present letter for Munday, but 'she will not go in without me'.

The letter had been torn in half, with loss of a strip of paper from the second leaf, resulting in damage to a couple of words from the valediction; it has been carefully repaired with archival tape, and is otherwise in fair condition, lightly aged, with slight fading of the ink on the first page. The large signature 'James Smith' is clear and undamaged. Addressed to 'J. W. Croker Esq'. An interesting letter, casting light on the workings of the Georgian civil service. At the time of writing Croker was Secretary to the Admiralty. The first paragraph reads: 'My dear Croker / The Appointment of Sir Giffin Wilson to a Mastership in Chancery has occasioned a Vacancy in the Office of Solicitor to the Board of Ordnance: so called although its duties are those of a Barrister. Sargeant Adair hed that office formerly and it was the custom of the Board, up to his period, to obtain the Reports of the Solicitor, as their Counsel, through the information of their Assistant Solicitor. My father was at this Time the Assistant Solicitor: and from the difficulty of obtaining the Sergeants Reports in Time, the Board adopted the Practice of being content with those of my father, as their Assistant Solicitor: afterwards of my father & self as joint Assistant Solicitors, and now of myself singly. This practice has prevailed for upwards of thirty years.' In the second half of the letter he continues his explanation of the various situations of solicitor and assistant solicitor, before asking Croker if he could use his influence to push for a merger of the two posts: 'I need not say that I should feel gratified and obliged.' His father failed in a similar application twenty-five years before, as a member of parliament had to hold the office of solicitor. 'Latterly, however, you are aware that Sir G. Wilson was not in Parliament.' It is not clear whether Croker intervened, or whether Smith's application was went any further.

This foundational text in American legal history was first published in 1838 and was established almost immediately as a standard work in the United States and Great Britain. It was one of the five treatises Abraham Lincoln recommended to aspiring lawyers and assigned to his apprentices. The final edition (the thirteenth) was issued in 1886. Roscoe Pound lists it among the treatises "which went far to shape the law" during the nineteenth century. The sixth edition is notable because it reflects the then-recent effects of codification, such as New York's Code of Civil Procedure (Field Code) and other legislative efforts to abolish traditional common law forms of action and merge the systems of law and equity. Seymour: Van Sandvoord was a preeminent scholar-jurist and author of the definitive treatise on the Field Code. His partner, Seymour, was a formidable political figure, serving as Rensselaer County D.A. and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Anson Bingham & Andrew J. Colvin: Bingham was a titan of real property law and a primary advocate for the 1860 Married Women's Property Act. His partner, Colvin, served as Albany's Corporation Counsel and State Senator; he is perhaps best remembered as the visionary behind the New York Forest Preserve. A Treatise on Rents is more than a legal text; it is a direct artifact of the Anti-Rent War (1839-1846). This tenant uprising against the "patroonship" system of the Van Rensselaers forced a total reckoning of New York's land-tenure laws. The work captures the legal environment that birthed the 1846 State Constitution, which finally abolished long-term feudal leases and dismantled the last vestiges of Dutch manorial privilege in the Hudson Valley.
