Green cloth, elaborately decorated and letterd in gilt on frnt cvr & spine (vry mnr shlfwr, slght rubbng), an excellent copy, from the family library of Major John William De Forest (1826-1906), served with Sheridan during the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley, and was a noted American author and poet. First edition of this exceedingly scarce emblem book written and edited by Presbyterian and Methodist ministers -- an impressive example of Victorian American book production, w/ charming and occasionally macabre & grotesque illustrations of morality, virtue, vice, and more.
