Bel exemplaire Chef de la commission gouvernementale chargée de définir les frontières… italo-abyssiniennes du côté somalien. L'expédition quitta Naples le 2 septembre 1910 et, une fois débarquée à Djibouti (19 septembre), elle continua par chemin de fer jusqu'à Dire Dawa (10 novembre). La mission débuta le 22 décembre et traversa l'Auàsc, en direction de l'Uebi Scebeli qui fut atteinte le 14 janvier 1911, après avoir surmonté la chaîne de montagnes de plus de 3 000 mètres d'altitude qui sépare le bassin de l'Auàsc de celui de l'Uebi Shabeli. Après avoir traversé les montagnes qui séparent ce dernier de celles du Ganale, du 17 au 29 janvier l'expédition s'est arrêtée à Gobà, où elle a rejoint son homologue abyssin pour réaliser ensemble les travaux de levé topographique. Importante resoconto del viaggio del Bottego raccontata da Vannutelli e Citerni, infatti pochi giorni dopo la partenza la Spedizione subà un poderoso attacco, nel quale il Bottego perse la vita. Alla disfatta contribuà molto il fatto che nessuno nella spedizione sapeva di cià che era accaduto ad Adua e appreso degli avvenimenti…del 1896. Cià nonostante la Società Geografica avesse cercato con i mezzi che aveva a disposizione di tenere informato il Bottego rispetto a cià che andava accadendo. Malgrado le dolorose dispersioni, i risultati scientifici furono ingenti e le varie raccolte vennero elaborate e studiate da singoli specialisti. Con questa seconda spedizione Bottego, la Società Geografica chiuse il ciclo delle grandi esplorazioni, e il senatore Doria, che ne era stato l'anima e la mente, rassegnà le dimissioni.
