Tipico rappresentante della zona grigia, Cistjakov è un testimone umanissimo e ambiguo, stretto tra insofferenza e paura, pietà e autocommiserazione. Non è un eroe, ma prova simpatia per le miserie dei prigionieri, vede le perversioni del sistema e l'inutilità di molte sofferenze, si irrita per gli ordini insensati. Medita il suicidio, ma desiste; sogna di tornare alla vita modesta di un leale cittadino sovietico, ma non si ribella; subisce collera, tristezza e vergogna protetto solo dalle pagine di questo diario, che diventa il suo sfogo e il suo segreto. E che costituisce oggi l'unica memoria diretta del Gulag capace di restituire la voce di un responsabile (se pur marginale) del suo funzionamento. Con un saggio di Marcello Flores.
