Chin-San-Long was born in 1892 in the Huaiyin district of Jiangsu Province. Spanning the entire course of the development of photography in China, his photographic career began in 1904 at the early age of thirteen and did not cease until his passing in 1995 at the age of 104. Pierre Verger took up the career of journalistic photographer at the age of 30, after losing his family. Over the next 15 years, he travelled four continents, documenting many civilisations that would soon be effaced by progress. His destinations included Japan and China in 1934 and 1937, and the Philippines and Indochina in 1938. Arthur de Carvalho was an amateur photographer working in the Far East during the 1930s. He employed a moody, pictorialist style in the creation of his work. Therese le Prat was a French photographer and artist active from the 1930s to 1966.

First edition. Numerous photographic plates. Text in English and Chinese. Folio. Original flexible boards, minor staining to cover, but overall a very good copy signed by Long on the title. Decorated endpapers. Unpaginated [256pp]. Taipei, Photographic Society of China, "This collection represents a combined compilation of my previous works that have appeared in various publications in the past. But it does not include those of my works whose negatives are left behind on the Chinese mainland, nor those whose prints are no longer extant." (Foreword). Long Chin-san (also Lang Jing-shan, 1892-1995) was a pioneering photographer and one of the first Chinese photo-journalists. He has been called ?indisputably the most prominent figure in the history of Chinese art photography?, and the ?Father of Asian Photography? He joined the Royal Photographic Society in 1937 and gained a Fellowship in 1942. He was one of the first Chinese photographer to take artistic nude shots, but became most famous for his misty landscapes where he tries to fuse the aesthetics of Chinese monochrome landscape paintings with pictorialist photography. To achieve the unique spatial concepts of a ink paintings he invented a method of ?composite photography? to great effect. After the Communist takeover Long moved to Taiwan (1949) where he became director of the Photographic Society of China. Rare. .
