Four black-and-white printed photographic illustrations, complete. List of Illustrations in front. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning. Covers are very clean and intact except for moderate age toning and browning and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. A report about farming with forage crops in Western Oregon and Western Washington by Byron Hunter, Assistant Agriculturist, Farm Management Investigations. This report was the result of thirty years' residence in the Pacific Northwest and nine years' residence in the Willamette Valley. The report addresses a number of subjects relating to the region. Hunter begins with a brief description of the Willamette Valley region (and other parts of Western Oregon and Western Washington) such as its climate and average monthly and annual rainfall. He talks about which crops do well in the region such as legumes and clover. There is brief discussion about hay, which Hunter says may be difficult to cultivate (he also talks about curing hay and haycaps). Then, Hunter talks about using silos. There is more discussion about legumes. He then proceeds to address forage crops, beginning with Red Clover. Among the other forage crops Hunter talks about are Alsike Clover, Common Vetch, Pearl Vetch, Field Peas, Alfalfa, Timothy grass, Rye-grasses, Orchard Grass, Meadow Fescue, Velvet Grass, Indian Corn, Thousand-headed Kale, root crops, and soiling (green-feeding) crops. Some of the descriptions of these crops are accompanied by explanations of how to sow them.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Being professional booksellers, we would never use a colloquial phrase like "ugly as all get-out" to describe the external appearance of this 1884 first edition of Nimmo's sought-after volume. Certainly it's not pretty -- "fair-to-good" at best. Original pebbled green-cloth boards are blind-stamped "U.S. Government Bindery"; gilt titles faded but still legible to spine. Top of rear board was once damp (though no dampstains seem to have penetrated to the text block), and that rear board shows a long diagonal dent. There are also some paper adhesions to front board (Please see scan.) The good news? Internal text block is complete with no substantial staining or foxing -- "very good." And all four original, large, two-color fold-out maps are complete and still attached at rear of the book -- actually making up about 40 percent of the inch-and-a-half thickness of this volume. Map One shows the principal transportation lines running west of Chicago and New Orleans, including projected rail lines into Mexico. Map Two shows the principal transportation lines East of the Mississippi (primarily rail lines but including the Erie Canal.) Maps Three and Four show the "transportation lines tributary to the commercial interests" of St. Louis, New Orleans, and Indianapolis. Partially unfolding Map No. 2 in order to fit a segment onto our flatbed scanner caused tearing along several fold lines, which required repair with Scotch "Magic" tape to verso (only.) Therefore, we will not be unfolding these 140-year-old maps in order to shoot any further scans. 309 pp. including 28 appendices. Reduced from $200.
