Original Blue Hardback. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 1999. ix, 325pp. Book and jacket both in excellent condition. SIGNED by the author on the title page "Bill with every good wish, Alec." 'Bill' was the eminent Scottish historian William Ferguson. A review by Ferguson for the Expository Times is in an envelope tipped in to the rear of the book. There are a very few of Ferguson's pencil marks in the text and a couple of notes at the end of the book. In these studies, Alec Cheyne explores the history of religion in Scotland since the Reformation. Prof. Cheyne examines the many and diverse changes in thought, worship, government and culture - all of themfar greater than traditionally supposed - that have taken place in the Scottish churches during the past 400 years He also describes the constant interaction between ecclesiastical and academic affairs, and the wider influences of the churches on Scottish life as a whole. Particular attention is devoted to such leaders as Robert Pollock, Robert Leighton, William Carstares, Thomas Chalmers, John Tulloch, John Caird, Henry Drummond, and the brothers John and Donald Baillie. Free Church Disruption, New College etc. Signed by the author.
