Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Scarce 1917 Wartime Printing. Octavo, pp. xvii, 187, complete with the original frontispiece illustration of the hand of Lord Kitchener and 4 pages of publisher advertisements to the rear. Bound in the original publisher's cloth with distinct cover illustrations and gilt text. The binding remains tight, square, and structurally robust. Internally, the primary text pages are clean, and free from internal markings.Condition & Production Note: True to its publication in 1917 during the height of First World War paper rationing, this edition utilises the characteristic high-acid wartime paper stock. Consequently, while the main text pages are clean, there is prominent, age-appropriate browning (page tone) and foxing heavily localised to the preliminary pages, frontispiece, endpapers, and the final index/advertisement leaves. Light bumping to the spine ends. Overall, a decent, robust copy of this early 20th-century occult classic.…

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. SIGNED copy of Cheiro's celebrated work on ghosts and the supernatural. Born William John Warner (1866-1936), Cheiro was one of the most famous clairvoyants, astrologers and palmists of his age. His clients reportedly included Mark Twain, Thomas Edison, Oscar Wilde and numerous other prominent figures of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. This is an attractive copy, most notably signed by Cheiro beneath his photographic portrait, a highly desirable feature and increasingly uncommon to find. The book remains generally sound and presents well. Text pages are remarkably bright and clean for the period, with only limited foxing, largely confined to the outer page edges and a small number of internal pages. The binding remains intact, although there is some movement to the spine and the book should be handled with appropriate care. The title page is absent and the Part I title page is detached but present. Apart from these points, the book appears substantially complete. The front free endpaper carries the faint impression of an old pencilled price. The pictorial boards remain attractive, retaining the original artwork by Countess Hamon with good colour and definition. The spine remains pleasing, with some rubbing and minor nicking at the head and foot. The rear cover illustration is also well preserved. Believed to date from circa 1928 and assumed to be a first edition, although a later impression remains a possibility. Overall, a highly collectible copy: the signature is excellent, the pages are unusually clean, and the pictorial binding remains attractive. Signed copies are scarce and sought after. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description and show the actual book offered for sale. Additional photographs are available on request. The book will be carefully packed for dispatch, and enquiries are always welcome. All images are original and copyrighted ©Tom Heywood Books and are not to be replicated without permission.
