Emphasis has been on experiment on the one hand and highly theoretical aspects on the other. However, when experiments on low temperature electron transport revealed a quantum-mechanical effect called "'tunneling," the need for collaboration between theorists who had worked with tunneling theory and electron transport experimentation in physics and chemistry became apparent. Initially there was a huge gap in communication and understanding that worked both ways.
