Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. The definitive history of this important private press, with comprehensive bibliography. Illustrated in b&w and colour (16 colour plates). With b&w photographic frontispiece. Includes bibliography & commentaries, plus list & index of books. With a preface by David Chambers. LIMITED EDITION. One of 1650 copies printed (500 for sale). From the preface: "Morris Cox started the Gogmagog Press in 1957, when he was in his mid-fifties, intending to publish for himself the poetry that he could not get published elsewhere. To his poetry he was to add original prints of great beauty, making books which I have long thought to be among the most important to come from any of the post-war private printers. Some collectors have sought his books for the excitement of their prints, some for the quality of the text; for myself it has been the originality of his temperament, displayed in text and prints combined, that I have found so desirable. The editions have been so limited that his work has only been at all well known to a small handful of collectors, and we hope that this account of his press will make him more generally, more properly known. He has himself been very reclusive, pleading that many visitors would hinder his work, and that his workshop was in any case too small to allow of entertainment. Those who have been fortunate enough to get to know him have been overwhelmed by the breadth of his knowledge, the depth of his philosophy, set off though it has been by the modesty of his nature. We offer this volume to Morris, as a tribute to the brilliance of his work at the Gogmagog Press. - as author, artist, and printer, creator of some of the most original hand-printed books in this latter part of the century". Printed in Great Britain. Bound in publisher's original orange cloth with black-ruled design to both boards, black lettering to spine, black endpapers. No dustjacket issued. A very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. Large heavy volume. 184pp. SB-7.

First Edition Signed
Cox, Maurice (illustrator). The First UK Printing published by Private Libraries Association, Pinner in 1991. Small folio; black morocco-backed black boards, decoratively lined in gilt; 'Gogmagog' embossed in gilt to the spine; maroon endpapers; proliferated throughout with illustrations in black and white and full colour, as well as nine additional specimens tipped in at the rear, of which three are additionally signed, numbered and captioned by Maurice Cox in pencil; housed in the original cloth slipcase; The BOOK is in near Fine condition with a minuscule spot of discolouration at the head, but otherwise fine in like slipcase which has a couple of tiny spots. This is number '11' of just 69 copies issued of the special limited edition, specially bound in full morocco and signed by Morris Cox. The trade edition was issued in an orange cloth format, unsigned and without the extra specimens to the rear. A tribute to the work of Morris Cox as printer, poet and novelist. Born and raised in London, Cox (1903-1998) received a scholarship to the West Ham School of Art at the age of just thirteen. After training for six years he worked in advertising before turning his hand to printmaking, painting and dustwrapper design, as well as penning a number of novels and numerous poems. This book also includes an invaluable annotated bibliography of the Gogmagog Press, which Cox founded in 1957. Through the press, 35 titles of his highly original, beautifully illustrated, hand-made and limited edition books followed between 1957 and 1983. The name derives from Cox's interest in mythology and folklore, with the character referring to a giant who lived in Cornwall during the 12th century. A wonderful example. First Edition. The Definitive Study of Gogmagog Press [GOGMAGOG PRESS]. CHAMBERS, David. FRANKLIN, Colin. TUCKER, Alan. Gogmagog. Morris Cox & the Gogmagog Press. Pinner: Private Libraries Association, 1991. First edition. Octavo (10 11/16 x 7 1/8 inches; 271 x 181 mm.). 184 pp. Illustrated throughout in color and black & white. Publisher?s original orange cloth with black stripes. A fine copy, clean and well preserved. The definitive study of Gogmagog Press and its founder Morris Cox, one of the most individual and influential figures in postwar British private-press printing. Drawing on close personal knowledge, archival research, and first-hand technical understanding, the authors chart Cox?s uncompromising approach to typography, illustration, and book design, as well as the press?s deep engagement with folk art, wood engraving, and English vernacular traditions. Lavishly illustrated with examples of Gogmagog books, ephemera, trial proofs, and working materials, the volume documents not only the finished productions but also the creative process behind them. Issued by the Private Libraries Association, it stands as the standard reference on the press and an essential resource for collectors, printers, and historians of twentieth-century private printing. A cornerstone reference for libraries and collections concerned with private presses, fine printing, and the continuing legacy of English book arts in the modern era.
