Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover.Number 21 in the Tales of the Mojave Road series. Dennis Casebier is a desert historian and founder of the Mojave Desert Archives; he and his wife Jo Ann acquired and restored the Goffs Schoolhouse as a regional cultural center. The book traces the history of Goffs, California, a small Mojave railroad and highway town that began in 1883 as a Southern Pacific Railway siding, became a junction when the Nevada Southern Railway was built to serve the mining towns to the north, and grew further when Route 66 passed through in 1923. The 1914 mission-style schoolhouse served as the community's church, dance hall, and meeting place; it closed in 1937 when Route 66 was realigned to the south and Goffs declined. The book covers the railroad and highway history of the town, the school's role in community life, and the modern restoration by the Friends of the Mojave Road. The front and rear lining pages list, by name and year(s) of attendance, every student known to have attended Goffs School between 1911 and 1937.Contents: Foreword & Acknowledgements; Overview; Maps; Top of the Hill Out of Needles; Santa Fe Expands in Goffs; Goffs Gets a School; Autoists; The Teens; Goffs Booms; The Ups & Downs of Goffs; School Daze; The War Years & Decline of the Schoolhouse; Saved at the 11th Hour; Friends of the Mojave Road at Goffs; Goffs in the Words of Contemporaries; Notes; Index.
