Carozzi has not only combed Voltaire's writing and correspondence meticulously, but also related Voltaire to a number of predecessors and contemporaries who influenced him (e.g., Kircher, Fontenelle, Maillet, Scilla, Bourguet, Woodward, Sauvages, Bertrand, Barrère, Guettard, Robinet).
