She received a B.A. in Politics and Education from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and an M.A. in Political Philosophy at San Jose State University, where she studied poetry with Robert Hass. She received an Ingram Merrill Foundation Grant Award and a Bay Area Writers' Award. Transparencies (in mss) was nominated for a Pushcart Poetry Prize by the late Harry Ford of Knopf and it was a finalist in Fordham University's Poets Outloud Competition. Her collection of poems Journey To Chartres was published by Black Swan Books. Carolyn Grassi's poetry has appeared in many journals and a suite of her poems was set to music by the composer Mary Heffron and performed at Mills College (now available on CD). She has taught Politics, Philosophy and Creative Writing. After many years in the Santa Clara valley, she and her husband Joseph, a! Biblical scholar, live in Pacifica near San Francisco.
