Condition: New. 2008 N & M Press reprint of 1789 original Edition. SB. 374pp. + 8 platesPublished Price £16 This classic manual of artillery, written by Major-General Alessandro DâAntoni (1715-1786), chief director of the Royal Military Academies of Artillery and Fortification in the city of Turin, combines three books in one. There is a treatise on the properties and treatment of gunpowder; a treatise on firearms; and a treatise on the practical application of artillery in wartime. Illustrated with many drawings and diagrams showing the use of artillery in both sieges and set-piece battles, this is a faithful facsimile printing of the bookâs original English translation which appeared in 1789, the year of the French Revolution, when the tactics and weaponry of which it treats so learnedly and lucidly were about to be unleashed on a European scale.

A Treatise on Gun-Powder; a Treatise on Fire-Arms; and a Treatise on Service of Artillery in Time of War by Alessandro Vittorio Papacino D'Antoni. Translated into English by Captain Thomson Condition: VERY GOOD. Complete, including half-title, errata leaf, blanks and all 24 fold-out plates. Published by T. and J. Egerton in London in 1789. First edition, first printing. Finely bound in modern 1/2 calf over contemporary marbled paper covered boards: cover bordering in blind: spine ruled and tooled in gilt with raised spine bands and a gilt-lettered morocco label in compartment two. Octavo, 8.5" x 5.5". Collated and complete: xl, 374, [2] with 24 fold-out copper engraved plates. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alessandro Papacino D'Antoni, born Alexandre Victor Papacino D'Antony (May 1714 - December 1786), was an Italian soldier who also distinguished himself in the fields of physics, mathematics and war engineering. Papacino came from a family of Franco-Spanish origins who distinguished themselves in the military. When war broke out again, the Kingdom of Sardinia allied itself first with France and then with Austria, and Papacino was able to make himself known not only as a good artilleryman, but also as a skilled military engineer, during the battles in which he fought. When he was chosen in 1755, as director of the Artillery School, Papacino had the rank of major in artillery. On June 12, 1759, he was appointed a knight of the Order of Saints Maurizio and Lazarus and it was then that he took his mother's surname, D'Antony, under which he is best known in the world of science. As director of the School of Artillery, Papacino created a course of study in which he united mathematical sciences, artillery and military engineering, which was in his teachings translated into French by Mont-Rosard and published in French in 1777. This course, of true military science, was adopted for teaching in artillery schools in Prussia and in the territories of the Republic of Venice. Despite being caught up in teaching, Papacino's military career was marked by continuous advancements in rank, eventually attaining the rank of lieutenant general. In 1783 he was appointed National Member of the Academy of Sciences of Turin with letters of foundation. He was chosen by Vittorio Amedeo III to teach the prince the art of war as a tutor; the sovereign, to testify to his satisfaction, granted him, on October 1, 1, 1779, a rich comandery in the lands of the Avogadro di Massazza. He was also named "Grand Master of Artillery of the Kingdom of Sardinia". Papacino D'Antony continued to take an interest in the development of Savoy artillery, establishing new formulas for the manufacture of powders. Since the artillery corps lacked sufficiently educated non-commissioned officers, he created a school for his regiment, so that every artiglier could read and write, paying the masters with his holdings. CONDITION REPORT: VERY GOOD Exterior and binding: NEAR FINE. Square spine, firm hinges and joints, slight bumping to a few corners, tight pages. Top edge darkened, per usual. Some rubbing to the original boards. Leather is glossy, colorful and fresh. Interior: VG. Majority of pages are clean and bright with white to gently toned pages. Foxing and some grubbiness to endpapers and blanks. A few bookseller pencil annotations on FFEP. First 28 pages of prelims with worming along bottom margin, not affecting text. Some light signs of handling: a few bent corners, an infrequent smudge, some marginal reading creasing and a few small margin tears. One leaf with insect nibbling to top corner margin with slight paper loss, not affecting text. Several plates with extra folds and some marginal wear or creasing. One plate has a 1.5"tear along a fold crease. Last few plates have a small pen-tip sized hole. All in all, a VERY GOOD copy of a scarce work on arms, weapons and gunpowder used during times of war by a renowned expert in the field, "The Grand Master of Artillery".
