Captain Snow wrote his vivid accounts while the events of the war were still fresh in his memory. As in any partisan account, Lee and His Generals is biased toward the sentiments and beliefs of the author. However, though Captain Snow's heart was with the Confederacy, he presents a balanced view of the Civil War and the Southern generals who, without reservation, deserve credit for their military brilliance. They pitted their skills against Union generals with greater resources~more men, more food, more ammunition~and managed a great many audacious and daring victories before their final defeat. Captain Snow also illuminates the terrible conflict felt by the Southern generals, many of whom were West Point graduates and had served in the war with Mexico with their northern counterparts. To turn against their former comrades was a bitter struggle for both the Northern and the Southern generals. Lee and His Generals is a passionate and personal account of a fascinating group of military personalities. From the capture of John Brown at Harper's Ferry to Lee's surrender at Appomattox, this account is not only well informed but entertaining.
