A supporter of the militant suffragettes' to one side; to the other, the remnants of a letter by Gonne are visible, which appear to describe the events of an imprisone…d member of the suffrage movement, including ". & her screams wer heard / incessantly up to 8pm by / a suffragette friend of mine / who was confined in a / neighbouring cell. / From Superintendent Wells / & from the papers I learn / that a deputation is desirous / to be received by Mr. Asquith…" Captain Charles Masterman Gonne was a British Army officer of the Royal Artillery, horseman and author. A prominent supporter of women's suffrag, he was active in the Actresses' Franchise League and he was the husband of actress and suffragist Mabel Tuke.
