The Bible is strangely silent concerning Jesus' movements between the ages of 12 and 30. The only incident of childhood recorded in the Gospels is His visit to the Temple at about the age of twelve. The occasion was the Feast of the Passover, when lectures were given in the Temple of Herod. There in the audience, listening to the words of the learned Rabbis, was the boy Jesus. Occasionally, as was His privilege, He asked a few questions. Then, He dared to disagree with the speakers. Soon, Jesus was invited to come to the lecture platform where He could be better seen and heard. As the debate progressed, the learned teachers were astonished and mystified at the questions the boy could propound and then answer Himself. The Rabbis wondered about this boy who could confound and amaze the world famous Faculty of the University of Palestine. The last New Testament account of the boy Jesus is found in Luke 2:52, "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and man." Then, eighteen years pass during which time the Scriptures are absolutely silent concerning the whereabouts and activities of the Divine Teenager. It has been the popular tradition for centuries that He lived in the village of Nazareth, Galilee, working as a carpenter until He took up His Galilean Ministry, at the age of thirty. Although the Gospels offer no record of these so-called "silent years," they do contain several distinct implications that these eighteen years were not spent in Palestine.
