Quarto, 11 1/4" x 8 5/8". 1,000 photographic and artistic plates (illustrations with text from plates). ABOUT THE AUTHOR & WORK Captain Ernest W. Peterkin (1920-1995) was a long-time scholar of U.S. wars, particularly the Civil War navies and served as consultant to the U.S. Navy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Smithsonian Institution on the management of Civil War shipwreck sites. Peterkin's "The Exercise of Arms in the Continental Infantry" is an important historical study and visual demonstration of the single most important American work influencing Continental Army regiments during the Revolutionary War, Major General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben's standardized manual of discipline. It was introduced in the spring of 1778 and published in 1779. Steuben's system did not appreciably simplify the largely ornamental manual of arm but did introduce set marching rates and uniform tactical formations, for the first time allowing Continental regiments to work as a unified battlefield force. CONDITION REPORT The book is NEAR FINE - Firmly bound, square spine, firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Colorful and glossy boards. Clean, bright white pages with no writing or ex libris marks. Rubbing to board edges and a few spots of foxing on the endpapers else FINE. A high-grade collectible copy of this scarce work.
