REFERENCES : Mazzarello P et al.: How Camillo Golgi became "the Golgi", FEBS Letters, 2009, 583, 3732-3737: "On April 1898 Camillo Golgi communicated to the Medical-Surgical Society of Pavia, the discovery of the 'internal reticular apparatus', a novel intracellular organelle which he observed in nerve cells with the silver impregnation he had introduced for the staining of the nervous system."; Berger EG & Roth J: The Golgi Apparatus, pp. 1-62: "Discovery of and early insights into the structure and function of the Golgi Apparatus: Golgi published the original observation describing the GA in Italian in the Bollettino societa medico-chirurgica di Pavia as a lecture given on the 15 July 1898. A French translation followed soon and thereby reached a much wider audience. The format of this paper resembles a practical teaching course which should guide the audience while scrutinizing microscopical preparations of neuronal cells, predominantly Purkinje cells of cat cerebellum. The structure Golgi found by applying a variety of reagents was called 'apparato reticulare interno'. Golgi categorically refused to speculate about its possible function while criticising the then fashionable tendency of anatomists to attribute a function to all newly discovered structures. Using a metallic impregnation method, Camillo Golgi described a heavily stained perinuclear network in neurons that he called 'l'appareil reticulaire interne'."; Dröscher A: The history of the Golgi apparatus in neurones from its discovery in 1898 to electron microscopy, Brain Res Bull. 1998 Oct;47(3):199-203; Celio MR: Perineuronal nets: past and present, Trends Neurosci. 1998, (12):510-5.: "Golgi ranked the peripheral reticulum-which adheres intimately to nerve cell surfaces- alongside the intracellular reticulum, or Golgi apparatus, which immortalized his name. At first dismissed as an artefact of capricious staining techniques, this peripheral reticulum, or perineuronal net, is now recognized as a genuine entity in neurocytology."; Kennedy MJ & Ehlers MD: Organelles and Trafficking Machinery for Postsynaptic Plasticity, Annu Rev Neurosci. 2006; 29: 325 362; Vitellaro-Zuccarello L et al. "At the end of the 1870s, Bizzozero's scientific activity increased enormously in the laboratory at the University of Turin, and outstanding scientific results soon followed. In 1879, he described a new instrument he had invented, named the 'chromo-cytometer', which allowed alterations in the content of haemoglobin in the blood to be quantified. With this instrument, Bizzozero, in collaboration with Golgi, was able to study the variation of haemoglobin in various pathological conditions and during blood transfusions into the peritoneal cavity, a procedure that allowed considerable quantities of blood to be transfused without the dangerous reactions that often occurred before the discovery of blood groups. "Between 1885 and 1892--a period in which great advances have been made in techniques and practice of the young science of microbiology--Camillo Golgi provided a notable contribution to malariology. Continuing studies and researches of Roman malariologists Ettore Marchiafava (1847-1935) and Angelo Celli (1857-1914), on the malarial parasites--described by the French military physician Alphonse Laveran--he studied the reproduction cycles of the Plasmodium in human blood (Golgi cycles) and elucidated the temporal coincidence between the recurrent chills and fever with the rupture and release of merozoites into the blood stream (Golgi law). He also demonstrated that the so-called tertian and quartan intermittent fevers are due to the presence in the blood of two different protozoan organisms Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium vivax (Alphonse Laveran believed that there was only one species, Oscillaria malariae). These observations made it possible to diagnose and treat the disease. He established that quinine, to varying degrees, was effective against the parasites at different stages of their development--those in the early stages were most affected. Moreover, excluding the etiological specificity of the famous Bacillus malariae, isolated by Klebs and Tommasi Crudeli before Laveran's discovery in the ground and water of the Pontin Marshes south of Rome, his studies determined the definitive disappearance from the scene of this bacterium; and opened a new phase of the research to which the Italian malariologists will give an important contribution, although the contrasts and scientific rivalries. This article follows the developments of the malariological research in Italy, plagued by the disease, on the contrary of other developed European countries (France and Great Britain) and examines the factors that influenced Italian scholars."
