Pochi sanno che Raffaele Calzini, il forse troppo dimenticato autore di Segantini o il romanzo de…lla montagna, scrisse pagine molto belle sulla Milano (e dintorni) della sua infanzia cioè la Milano di fine Ottocento. Sul filo della memoria, il Cal-zini fa rivivere, in queste pagine, da noi ora ristampate, la Milano appunto di fine Ottocento, in tutti i suoi aspetti. Le donne, innanzitutto. Di tutti i ceti sociali. Dalle nobili e aristocratiche, alcune delle quali, non certo le più giovani, potevano ricor-dare, sia pur vagamente, di aver visto Stendhal in qualche salotto, a quelle della piccola e media borghesia che sempre più avanzavano sul teatro cittadino, a quelle dei ceti più umili che venivano dal contado in città per servire. A queste ultime il Calzini dedica una pagina commovente, in cui polemica e poesia armoniosa-mente s'intrecciano. Dopo le donne gli uomini. Generalmente attivi ed intrapren-denti ma con qualche ingenua mania. Per esempio di essere iscritti a qualche pre-stigioso circolo. Dopo le donne e gli uomini, le case o, meglio, gli interni delle ca-se descritti dal Calzini con amorosa. precisione. Dopo le case vengono i cibi che in queste si consumavano con particolare riguardo, evidentemente, a quelli tipi-camente milanesi. Anche la vita culturale non è certo dimenticata, in special modo quella legata al teatro. In proposito vi è, nel libro, un finissimo ritratto-ricordo di Edoardo Ferravilla, il famoso attore comico. Un altro bel ricordo-ritratto è dedica-to a Monsignor Ratti, allora Prefetto dell'Ambrosiana e divenuto poi Papa. Sem-pre in ambito religioso, oltre alla vivace descrizione delle feste tradizionali, vi è, nel libro, un singolare ricordo dedicato al Cardinale Ferrari, visitato dal Calzini assai giovane, proprio quando egli era sul letto di morte. Aprono il volume alcune intense pagine dedicate a Milano subito dopo i terribili bombardamenti del 15 a-gosto 1943. Il libro ha una limpida e cordiale prefazione di Luigi Santucci, lo scrittore forse più milanese della letteratura italiana d'oggi. Prefazione di Luigi Santucci.
