A particularly attractive first printing of Marcom's first novel, a formally adventurous work of historical fiction centered on the Armenian genocide of 1915-1917. Drawing in part upon the life of Marcom's maternal grandmother, a genocide survivor, the novel constructs a mosaic of Armenian and Turkish lives through short, shifting narratives whose fragmented structure deliberately evokes memory, rumor, testimony, and historical disappearance. Marcom subsequently developed the subject into a trilogy concerned with the Armenian genocide and its aftermath. Three Apples Fell from Heaven was named a New York Times Notable Book, was recognized among the year's notable books by The Washington Post and became a runner-up for the 2002 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for distinguished first fiction. Marcom went on to receive the PEN/USA Award for The Daydreaming Boy, a Whiting Award, and fellowships from the Lannan Foundation and United States Artists; she is now Professor and Director of Creative Writing at the University of Virginia. The physical production is unusually thoughtful for a contemporary literary first: red cloth spine over cream fibrous paper-covered boards, with a blind-stamped ornamental device to the front board, deep rust-colored endpapers, and a typographically spacious interior designed by Marysarah Quinn. The jacket, designed by Jess Morphew, reproduces Arshile Gorky's The Artist and His Mother (c. 1926/1936), from the National Gallery of Art - an especially resonant choice because Gorky himself was an Armenian survivor of the genocide-era catastrophe and painted the work from a prewar photograph of himself with his mother. The original jacket retains its price and carries advance praise from Cristina García, Junot Díaz, and Peter Balakian. Condition: Near Fine / Near Fine. Book is clean, square, and firmly bound, with clean interior leaves and no ownership markings. Boards remain handsome, with the textured cream paper and blind-stamped device well preserved. An appealing, collectible copy of an important Armenian-American literary debut. This is a confirmed First Edition, First Printing. The copyright page shows copyright 2001 and the complete Riverhead/Penguin Putnam number line: 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2. The presence of 1 establishes the first printing. The ISBN corresponds to the 2001 Riverhead hardcover;;the later Riverhead paperback appeared in 2002. There is a particularly good piece of book-design storytelling here: Arshile Gorky's The Artist and His Mother is not merely decorative jacket art. Gorky was born Vosdanig Adoian into an Armenian family in the Ottoman Empire, and the famous double portrait grew from a photograph of Gorky and his mother taken before her death during the upheavals suffered by Armenian refugees. Its placement on the first edition of Marcom's novel therefore creates a visual bridge between family photograph, memory, survival, loss, and artistic reconstruction - essentially the same problems the novel addresses in prose. Combined with the family photograph reproduced beside the contents and Marcom's acknowledgment that the novel grew from her grandmother's experience, this first edition was conceived as an unusually coherent physical object rather than simply a text in a generic trade binding.
