Whitman earned both his masters and doctoral degrees in engineering from MIT where he then taught for over 40 yearsand remained an active member of the MIT community for many more years as a professor eme…ritus. Their work on slope stability under dynamic loading established the basis for the "Newmark sliding block method" for estimating earthquake-induced ground displacements.
