Illustrated with the engravings of J. Sturt, originally used in the 1728 edition. . Head and heel of spine are heavily rubbed with lighter rubbing on the rest of the spine, one small gouge in the middle of the spine, front hinge cracked, former owner's gift inscription (book was given as a school prize) with name and date of school on fep, else pristine, unmarked, square and clean. GOOD. B&W engravings. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. 290 pp. Illustrated by J. Sturt (illustrator).

The thirty-first edition, comprising both parts bound together in one volume. Bunyan"s first part was originally published in 1678, with the second following in 1684. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and nineteen engraved plates. Collated, complete. ESTC No.: N492956. The Pilgrim"s Progress is Bunyan"s celebrated Christian allegory, following Christian"s journey from the City of Destruction towards the Celestial City and the spiritual trials, temptations and companions encountered along the way. The second part follows Christian"s wife, Christiana, and their children as they undertake the same pilgrimage. John Bunyan (1628-1688) was an English preacher and writer whose imprisonment for unlicensed preaching provided the circumstances in which he began composing The Pilgrim"s Progress.
