Traviès et Henry Gobin… Paris, Garnier Frères, Libraires-Éditeurs. Metà '800. Complessivamente dodici volumi di cm 26,5, pp 8.500 circa complessive. Con 150 tavole fuori testo finemente colorate tra cui il ritratto di Buffon all'antiporta del primo volume ed un'antiporta allegorica al secondo. Solida ed elegante legatura coeva ed uniforme in mezza pelle e percallina rossa, dorsi ai nervi con titoli e filetti in oro. Solo qualche lieve ed ininfluente scoloritura ai piatti, peraltro esemplare solidamente legato, fresco, pressochè esente da arrossature ed in eccellente stato di conservazione. Tutte le tavole sono protette da velina originale. L'opera è così suddivisa: Tomo 1: Theorie de la Terre, Histoire des Animeaux; Tomo 2: Le Homme, Animeaux domestiques; Tomo 3: Les Quadrupedes; Tomo 4: Les Singes, Add. aux Quadrupedes; Tomi 5-8: Les Oiseaux; Tomo 9: Itrod. aux Minèraux, Epoques de la Nature; Tomi 10-11: Les Minèraux; Tomo 12: Expériences sur le Végétaux, Arthmétique morale, Tables Generales des Matières. VII e VIII: 36 tavole prevalentemente di pesci e serpenti. Il tutto inciso in rame su tavole fuori testo di maggiore grammatura (ciascuna protetta da velina), finemente colorato e gommato all'epoca. Elegante legatura uniforme del tempo in mezza pelle, dorsi lisci con titoli e fregi in oro e a secco. Qualche fioritura alle carte con poche sezioni uniformemente brunite che non interessa le tavole salvo in alcuni casi dove queste ultime risultano brunite. Si tratta della prima e migliore edizione prodotta dallo stampatore Furne, di particolare pregio l'accuratezza nella coloritura della parte iconografica. A questa seguirono in pochi anni altre quattro edizioni aumentate di 5 tavole ma meno pregiate nella qualità della stampa. Non comune sopratutto quando completo degli ultimi due volumi con l'opera di Lacepede che viene spesso proposta come lavoro autonomo. Cfr. Nissen ZBI, 700.
