Paul Jakob Bruns (1743-1814) war ein deutscher lutherischer Theologe, Orientalist, Literarhistoriker, Bibliothekar und Professor der Universitäten Helmstedt und Halle. Sein besonderes Interesse galt der Geographie, er übernahm 1791 die Bearbeitung des Werkes "Versuch einer systematischen Erdbeschreibung der entferntesten Welttheile, Afrika, Asien, Amerika und Südindien", das zuvor von dem Nürnberger Verlag Bauer und Raspe verlegt und von dem Frankfurter Verleger Fleischer übernommen wurde. Die vorliegenden sechs Bände bilden die erste Abteilung des Werkes, die später auch unter dem Titel "Neue systematische Erdbeschreibung von Afrika" veröffentlicht wurden; weitere Abteilungen über die anderen Kontinente sind nicht erschienen.
