Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. This is "Selections from the Poetical Works of Robert Browning", published by Hurst and Company circa 1913 and dressed in a limp brownish, olive green suede leather with circuit edges. The leather has aged along the edges and the spine to a rich brown commonly seen in such bindings. The front of the book has the author's name lettered in gilt. At the bottom fore-edge corner of the front cover is an ornate floral design in the Art Nouveau style, also stamped in gilt. The end-papers were given a faux-marbled effect. There is a half-tone frontispiece. The book, as its title states is only a selection of Browning's works, but a goodly selection it is, including such great works as "Fra Lippo Lippi", "Andrea Del Sarto", "By the Fireside", "In a Gondola", "James Lee's Wife", "Youth and Art", "How they Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix" "A Lovers Quarrel", and many more. PLEASE TAKE NOTE: Old suede always presents problems of preservation, since it has a tendency to split and crumble, as well as to shed. On this binding one can see that the spine extremities have suffered loss; and, whilst handling one may well notice a light residue dusting from the leather marking one's hands. This is not a book to hold against a white or any light surface! I've brushed it as clear as I could without harming the soft texture. There is also some discoloration or darkening along the edges of the end-papers; this is an effect of the glue used in construction. The suede displays a bit of scuff to the rear, as well as the aforementioned color change. The interior displays a few insignificant smudges and spots, but for the most part is clean and presentable. the paper is modestly toned. the gilding to the top edge of the text-block is rubbed. The suede still feels soft. TITLE : Selections from the Poetical Works of Robert Browning. AUTHOR : Robert Browning (1812 - 1889) IMPRINT : Hurst and Company. PLACE : New York. DATE : No date [ but circa 1913 ] EDITION : Reprint. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Published for the trade. contains a frontispiece; 224 pages; approximately 4 1/2" x 6 1/2", limp suede leather with circuit edges; title and decorative embellishment in gilt; Top edge gilt; end-papers given a faux marbled effect. In the old publisher's trade advertisements, this leather is described as "ooze calf" but we mostly know it now as suede. If there is a difference in texture or look it is such as to be only noticeable by a leather chemist!
