Hardback. Condition: Good. The empowering story of a real-life Rosie the Riveter who served as a Women Airforce Service Pilot. Dorothy Lucas yearned to discover all that she was capable of. After the devastating news of Pearl Harbor, her brothers joined the World War II war effort, but Dorothy wanted to do her part, too. So, she enlisted to serve as a Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP). After hours of flight school and roaring engines, Dorothy and her fellow WASPs risked their lives towing targets in the air for the male fighter pilots in training. Through many mechanical scares and smoke-filled cockpits, Dorothy remained brave and committed to her job--defying gravity and defying the odds. With lyrical text from Meghan P. Browne and striking illustrations by Brooke Smart, Dorothy the Brave tells an untold story of a real-life Rosie the Riveter, and how women worked to keep America safe during a harrowing time. Smart, Brooke (illustrator).…

Paperback. Condition: Good. A COMPLETE STAND-ALONE NOVEL and also Book #2 of THE LIBERTY TRILOGY) Gretta Curran Browne's books have been internationally published in translation throughout Europe and Japan and China. *** Michael Dwyer was born, cradled and then grew from boy to man under the shade of the Wicklow Hills. He knows every inch of them - the secret streams to quench a man's thirst, the wild game to keep away hunger, the wood in excess to burn, and the sheltering caves. And then, in the historic year of 1798 he comes to know love. When Michael Dwyer first dances with Mary Doyle on the night of the Spring Fair, many of the locals see their love story unfold before their eyes, a story so unique they will later tell it to their grandchildren. Destined to be a farmer like his father before him, Michael loves the land, and is content to work in the fields and live of the yield, but in that same year of 1798 the militia, hated pawns of the rulers in Dublin Castle, force him to leave the land and take to his beloved mountains, where he becomes what every Wicklow youth dreams of being - a man who owns no master, a man who refuses to bend a servile knee. And always, standing somewhere amidst the green glens and beautiful landscape of Wicklow, is Mary, watching and waiting, caring nothing for patriotism and heroism, only for her love of the rebel captain, but love on the run cannot last forever. Having walked the green glens of Michael Dwyer's native County Wicklow, Gretta Curran Browne - in this rigorously researched historical novel - reveals the complexities and humanity of an extraordinary Irish rebel leader. FIRE ON THE HIL is a magnificent historical novel and a passionate and poignant love story.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Noel Browne was one of the key figures in 20th-century Irish politics: a radical in his time, he campaigned for health improvements for women and children back in the '50s, when the Church and Ireland were closely aligned and state intervention in health care was considered going against Church doctrine. As Minister of Health he fell out of favor with official Ireland but became a hero to the Irish people. He was a fascinating figure, fighting poverty and illness, to serve the Irish people. Phyllis Browne's memoir, told with humor, sharp intelligence, and courage, reveals another side to her social revolutionary husband, as well as her own politician's wife tale.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. George Brownie Browne was a twenty-three-year-old civil engineer in Waterbury, Connecticut, when the United States entered the Great War in 1917. He enlisted almost immediately and served in the American Expeditionary Forces until his discharge in 1919. An American Soldier in World War I is an edited collection of more than one hundred letters that Browne wrote to his fianc e, Martha Marty Johnson, describing his experiences during World War I as part of the famed 42nd, or Rainbow, Division. From September 1917 until he was wounded in the Meuse-Argonne offensive in late October 1918, Browne served side by side with his comrades in the 117th Engineering Regiment. He participated in several defensive actions and in offensives on the Marne, at Saint-Mihiel, and in the Meuse-Argonne. This extraordinary collection of Brownie's letters reveals the day-to-day life of an American soldier in the European theater. The difficulties of training, transportation to France, dangers of combat, and the ultimate strain on George and Marty's relationship are all captured in these pages. David L. Snead weaves the Browne correspondence into a wider narrative about combat, hope, and service among the American troops. By providing a description of the experiences of an average American soldier serving in the American Expeditionary Forces in France, this study makes a valuable contribution to the history and historiography of American participation in World War I. David L. Snead is an associate professor of history at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. He is the author of The Gaither Committee, Eisenhower, and the Cold War.…
