Decorative green cloth boards with gilt titles, corners bumped, edges lightly scuffed, minor surface marks and wear, 19 pages plus advertisements, all 8 plates called for present, minor marks and wear to the contents, binding tight but the frontispiece has torn to three-quarters of its length and is in danger of coming loose. With wear and chipping to the corners; edgewear to the extremities. Printed on heavy stock. With all 8 hand-coloured plates dated 1878. With a previous owner's inscription on the front endpaper: "Louise S. McDowell. from cousin Margaret. 1880." With 16 pages of ads for books published by Dutton (Griffith & Farran). A charming and somewhat uncommon first American edition of this tale. The First US edition of this title with 1880 inscription.

Condition: Good. Chromolith full page plates [8] by Helen S. Tatham (1848-1892) "by the sister of the author", with plates dated 1878. Quarto red cloth with black and gilt decoration on bevelled boards (some spotting, soiling/recased with spine repaired) 18pp printed on one side only except for the first text leaf which is printed on both sides. Final plate is mounted on the blank final page of the book followed only by the rear Endpapers. Endpapers were repaired at gutter when recased and inscription "Dorina Mary Carte from Frederic S. Donaldson 3rd Feb, 1880" [Dorina Mary Carte 1876-1969, daughter of Thomas Sampson Carte & Ellen Carte, Clerk in Holy Orders] to front free endpaper. A few signs of use but a charming collaboraion of illustrations and rhyming text by the two sisters. 4 volumes. Hardcover.
