Including illustrating travel memoirs and corporate promotions, documenting construction projects, providing information for science and cartography, gathering ethnographic data, and producing tourist souvenirs. With no trails or roads providing access to remote peaks and valleys, travel was treacherous, and the equipment required could weigh more than 200 kilograms. The first photographers who ventured into the mountains tried to reflect the immensity and beauty of the landscape. This quickly gave way to a new approach motivated by the urge to demonstrate humanity's conquest of nature. This book documents both phases, combining early impressions of breathtaking grandeur with photographs of exploration, surveying, the building of roads and railways, the extraction of resources, and the establishment of communities. This book contains some 200 black & white fascinating images. Brock Silversides is an audio-visual archivist living in Edmonton. He is the author of several books including "The Face Pullers: Photographing Native Canadians 1871-1939.
