Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Waiting for the Light Early Mountain Photography in British Columbia & Alberta, 1865-1939; Brock V. Silversides; Fifth House Publishers, Saskatoon & Calgary; 1995. First edition. Presentation copy. From the blurb Mountain photography had many practical uses during its early decades. Including illustrating travel memoirs and corporate promotions, documenting construction projects, providing information for science and cartography, gathering ethnographic data, and producing tourist souvenirs. With no trails or roads providing access to remote peaks and valleys, travel was treacherous, and the equipment required could weigh more than 200 kilograms. The first photographers who ventured into the mountains tried to reflect the immensity and beauty of the landscape. This quickly gave way to a new approach motivated by the urge to demonstrate humanity's conquest of nature. This book documents both phases, combining early impressions of breathtaking grandeur with photographs of exploration, surveying, the building of roads and railways, the extraction of resources, and the establishment of communities. This book contains some 200 black & white fascinating images. Brock Silversides is an audio-visual archivist living in Edmonton. He is the author of several books including "The Face Pullers: Photographing Native Canadians 1871-1939. This book, 184 pages, is in fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket, that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. A price sticker from Audreys Books is attached on the back side of the dust jacket. Signed by Author(s).

An extensive selection of historical photographs from the Canadian west examines the photographer's role in creating and influencing the cultural myth of the cowboy. The text and photographs reveal how and why the archetypical cowboy images evolved, and how these images were used for postcards, tourist literature and souvenirs, magazine and book illustrations, and even for selling cattle." - from dust jacket. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear. An excellent copy.
