Pierre Bretonneau fut agent de santé publique à Chenonceaux, puis chirurgien en chef à l'hôpital de Tours. En 1815, il réalise sa thèse de doctorat sur l'utilité de la compression et du bandage de Theden dans les inflammations idiopathiques de la peau (Paris, 1815).
