Sponsored by War Resisters League, Greenwich Village Peace Center, Vietnam Peace Parade Committee, Emmaus House, Campaign End the Air War, Social Action Committee - Community Church, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, War Tax Resistance, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Women's Strike for Peace, and Catholic Peace Fellowship. Theatre groups include the Living Theater, Bread and Puppet Theater, the Open Theater, and the Emma Goldman Brigade. "More than 2.500 anti-war demonstrators staged a 'simulated saturation bombing' in front of the corporate headquarters of International Telephone and Telegraph here, to protest Nixon?s escalation and ITT?s involvement in the Indochina war. In New York, the demonstrators sought to dramatize what happens daily to people in Indochina during the bombing. Thousands of parachutes called 'simulated electronic battlefield sensors' were thrown into the Park avenue area from between 49th and 50th streets from an upper floor of the Warldorf-Astoria Hotel. Such 'sensors' pinpoint U.S. anti-population bombing raids. Tens of thousands of leaflets shaped like the anti-personnel bombs (guava, pineapple, and dragontooth bombs) used in Southeast Asia fluttered down on Park avenue as the sounds of a bombing raid blared from sound effect devices. Each leaflet explained the bomb it represented and its effect on human beings and called upon people to join the protest. Those demonstrators who were 'killed' by the bombing lay down in front of ITT headquarters, blocking traffic. They smeared themselves with ketchup and red-dies to simulate blood. The 'survivors' of the bombing were rounded up by members of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and placed in 'concentration camps.' The VVAW members carried toy M-16s and had signs attached to their backs reading 'Saigon Police.' Mimeographed wrappers and text, wire stitched as issued, printed on blue, cream and pink paper; all vols pp. 32, with black and white illustrations to each page; very slight toning to edges of all volumes, otherwise sharp and bright; Fine. A rare gathering of three early mimeographed issues of the Bread and Puppet Newspaper, produced by the New York countercultural theatre group, Bread and Puppet, in protest against the Vietnam War.The Bread and Puppet Theatre was founded in New York by Peter Schumann in 1963. Their early productions addressed local concerns in the Lower East Side, such as rent rates and rats. By the mid-1960s, as American involvement in Vietnam escalated, their attention turned towards anti-war activism. They arranged street pageants, shows, and protests, but they also produced printed materials, such as these pamphlets, which criticised US involvement in Vietnam. Newspaper workshops took place once a week, 'so that the news could be understood'. Each thirty-two-page issue sought to distil 'all the news that's fit to print', 'all the good news', and 'almost all the bad news', guided by the principle that 'everything that can be said on 32 little pages has to be said on 32 little pages' (This is the Bread and Puppet Museum, c. 1968). These early newspapers are concerned with the Vietnam War. They criticise Henry Cabot Lodge, the bombing of Vietnam, and the destruction of Ben Suc.
