To the wife of the music publisher Ernst Wilhelm Fritzsch, telling her he is on his way to Frankfurt but has little hope of meeting her there: "[.] Now that my suitcase is been packed I can only enclose my best wishes. Bülow, who is here at the moment, often speaks of you and I am sure he would wish to see his greetings included [.]" (transl.). - On stationery with embossed vignette; some small edge tears.

136 x 97 mm on cardboard. From the studio of Eduard (Ede) Nepomuk Kozic, Pressburg (then part of Hungary and known locally as Pozsony; now Bratislava, capital of Slovakia). Brahms made frequent visits to the city, performing as a conductor and pianist.

8vo. 3¾ pp. on bifolium. To his publisher Fritz Simrock: "Epstein dankt mir u. ich danke Ihnen herzlich daß Sie so freundlich hinter dem Rücken des Autors in s[einem] Namen versandten. Nun aber: Was dem E. recht, ist dem Door billig! Wenn Sie das nicht selbst schon gedacht haben, bitte ich, doch auch an Door (I, Sonnenfelsgasse 1) ein Ex. zu senden. (An Brüll habe ich gegeben u. an Mandyczewski.) Wollen wir mit den Uebungen dann auch so liebenswürdig gegen die Professoren sein? Daß mir diese Freundlichkeit gegen m[eine] hiesigen Kollegen sehr angenehm ist, brauche ich nicht zu sagen. Ich möchte dann wohl um 4 Ex. bitten - aber ein Ex. der Klst. muß ich schon bitten wieder beizulegen, damit auch ich sie habe. Das Neueste vom Jahr lege ich dafür bei! [.]". - In a pencil postscript, Brahms asks Simrock to send one copy each of his 51 exercises to Door and Epstein, as well as four copies to himself, and also one copy of his "op. 118": "Eben kommt ein Brief von Kirchner - Sie sind eben besser als ich, denn so viel ich erinnere, hatte ich nicht an ihn gedacht".

Oblong 8vo. 1 page. With autograph address. To Gustav Ophüls, telling him where to find his folk songs, "namely in Nicolay's Almanack, as well as in Kretzschmer and Zuccalmaglio's collection". For some songs Brahms does not know the source: "Erlauben Sie in aller Kürze: meine Volkslieder finden sie zum größten Theil in Nicolay's feinem Almanach u. in Kret[z]schmer's und Zuccalmaglio's Volksliedersammlung (je 2 Theile) für einige (z. B. 'Erlaube mir', 'In stiller Nacht') weiß ich keine gedruckte Quelle [.]". - The pianist and music critic Gustav Ophüls (1866-1926) was director of the district court in Düsseldorf and published a collection of texts set to music by Brahms ("Brahms-Texte. Vollständige Sammlung der von Johannes Brahms componirten und musikalisch bearbeiteten Dichtungen", 1898). In 1921 he also published his memoirs of Brahms ("Erinnerungen an Johannes Brahms"). - In perfect condition.

Oblong 8vo. 1 page. Five bars from The Triumphlied (Op. 55), a work for baritone solo, choir and orchestra, with underlined text: "Denn wahrhaftig u. gerecht sind seine Gerichte etc." Brahms wrote the work on the occasion of the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War and dedicated it to emperor Wilhelm I.

Calling card format. 1 page. With autogr. envelope. Recommending "Monsieur de la Nux" - presumably the French composer Paul Véronge de la Nux - to the music store of the Hug brothers. - In fine condition.

8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. To his editor Peter Joseph Simrock regarding his 4 songs, op. 17 which he had recently sent him for publication. Brahms informs him that Clara Schumann asks to send the full score as well as the voices to Dr. Hübner. - Brahms's "Gesänge für Frauenchor" (as his 4 songs are called in German) were given for the first time as part of Clara Schumann's concerts in Hamburg and Altona on January 15 and 16, 1861. - Julius Hübner was a German historical painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting and the brother-in-law of Brahms's friend, the painter Eduard Bendemann.

Small 8vo. 3pp. on bifolium. To his friend and publisher Fritz Simrock, consoling his friend by writing of his admiration for him, and hoping that Simrock's family problems will soon be over and that he will soon be able to listen and play music again, sending greetings to his wife and discussing a visit to Berlin, and explaining his reluctance to go even though he is inundated with invitations both there and in Leipzig. - Inscribed on blank folio in another hand "1895 Wien 11 Novbr Brahms"; folds.

Large 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. Amicable letter to Fanny von Pausinger, with whom Brahms had spent his last summer sojourn at Pörtschach, remembering the nice time together and some residents.
