Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book studies the damage to pine plantations in southern Illinois following two glaze storms in 1950 and 1952. The author, an expert in forestry, conducted the study in an area where the northern limit of shortleaf pines in the central states is. Plantations of both shortleaf and loblolly pines, which had been planted to combat soil degradation, were the focus of the study. The author observed the plantations and notes damage from storms and cold, comparing the effects of the two types of weather events. The book discusses the effects of the forest plantations on the areas they were planted in, and the value of forestry in improving degraded land. The study also considers the impact of thinning trees to prevent severe damage during storms, and the importance of selecting species that can adapt to different geographic locations. The author concludes by emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong, stocky trees in plantations to minimize storm damage and highlights the risk of planting pine species in areas where they may not be well-suited to the local climate.
