Hardcover / Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Hardback. SIGNED. Foreword by Reg Gutteridge. Tommy Farr was one of Britain's most respected sportsmen, and was arguably the finest heavyweight British boxer of all time. A man of true courage, his life story is inspiring. From the extreme poverty of his childhood in the Rhondda Valley when he peddled goods from a handcart, to the glory days in the boxing ring when he fought the great Joe Louis, his life was a battle. He left the mines and the fairground boxing booths to seek his fortune in London and there he had to fight to get fights. Never forgetting his Welsh roots, he went on to enjoy the high life in pre-war London and New York, where he mixed with other celebrities and was mobbed by fans. But then, after his retirement to Brighton, he faced bankruptcy from property ventures and betting businesses until, at the age of 37, he was forced into an astonishing comeback to support his beloved family. Meticulously researched and told with insight and affection, this book is compelling reading and includes superb descriptions of the epic contests between the wars which evoke all the drama of the boxing ring. Illus., Bibliog. and Appendix. 353pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of the legendary Scotland Yard detective, the late Leonard 'Nipper' Read, who was Chair then President of the British Boxing Board of Control. Hardcover / Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition. Hardback. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED. Foreword by Sugar Ray Leonard. Dave 'Boy' Green was one of the most exciting British boxers of the previous 30yrs. After an amateur career of over 100 fights, he turned professional in 1974 under the guidance of Andy Smith, and within 2yrs captured the British and European light-welterweight titles. Born at Chatteris in the heart of the Fenland region of Cambridgeshire, Green was a throw-back to the days of another local favourite, Eric Boon. Inspired and encouraged by the former lightweight champion, he thrilled packed arenas with his aggresssive, two-fisted brand of fighting, and burst onto the scene at a time when Fenland folk were desperate for a big sporting hero. In 1977, at the peak of his career, Dave fought magnificently against world champion Carlos Palomino, only to be knocked out in the 11th round with the fight in the balance. Undeterred, he re-grouped, won the European welterweight title, and in 1980 again unsuccessfully challenged for the world title, this time in the United States against American superstar, Sugar Ray Leonard. Although Green had a magnificent ring career, this book is not just about boxing. It is an insight into the life of a man brought up in a humble farming community, who through sheer hard work, also became a highly successful businessman and provided a wonderful life-style for his family. Hardcover / Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Hardback. PRESENTATION COPY. A Boxing biography of the British featherweight champion and Olympic Gold Medallist Terry Spinks. Despite having retired from boxing almost 40 years previously, Terry Spinks remained one of the sport's most popular personalities. His story, however, is not just about success. It is also one of failure, sadness and emotion. In fact his life had been a roller-coaster ride. He took up boxing at the age of 9, and in an amateur career of 200 contests, won Schoolboy and ABA championships, and boxed for England on 5 occasions. The pinnacle of his career was in 1956 when he won a gold medal at the Melbourne Olympics. During a successful professional career, he won the British Featherweight championship, but after retiring from the ring in 1962, disaster struck. In the years which followed he had to cope with the pressures of failed business ventures and bankruptcy. An addiction to gambling seriously affected his life-style and family well-being. Although he returned to boxing to train the South Korean team for the 1972 Olympics, and later became a successful professional trainer, disaster struck again. Two failed marriages were followed by serious illness which he was fortunate to survive. Only the love, patience and caring of his cousin Rosemary carried him through. Told with warmth, affection and emotion, this is an enthralling insight into the life of a man who grew up on the streets of Canning Town. Illus., Bibliog. + Appendix. 295pp. 8vo. h/back.
