Le phénomène bouddhique demeure cependant, pour l'essentiel, lié à l'Asie. Originaire de l'Inde, il s'est étendu, sur une aire gigantesque, des royaumes hellénistiques aux archipels japonais et indonésiens. Plus ou moins éteint dans certains pays, il demeure dans d'autres l'épine dorsale de la société, avec tous les aspects des grandes religions : la profondeur des doctrines et du mysticisme, les liens indissolubles avec la sensibilité religieuse, l'économie, la culture, la politique et la civilisation.
