The author was taken prisoner by the Japanese in the Philippines in May 1942. He and 2 others escaped to the jungles of Luzon and were recaptured after 3 months. On recapture they were sent to Bilibid, a maximum security prison near Manila where, as escapes, they were subject to extreme punishment and privation and the constant threat of summary execution.
