Add to basketCondition: Near Fine. An archive of over 38 items: consisting of carbon copies of typed letters and associated telegrams, typescripts, and signed typed letters retained by William Hillman, a correspondent, and later Chief of Staff of foreign correspondents, for Hearst newspapers, stationed in Paris, Berlin, and London from 1926 to 1939. The material was kept in Hillman's "George Bernard Shaw" file and relates to Bernard Shaw's contributions to various Randolph Hearst publications during the 1930s, and to Gabriel Pascal's 1938 award winning film adaptation of Shaw's play *Pygmalion*. The collection includes two important Typed Letters, Signed from Pascal to Hillman about the filming of *Pygmalion* (partly underwritten by Hearst Enterprises), together with a two-page telegram from Than Vanneman Ranck (editorial manager for all the Hearst papers). Also included are transcripts of two of Hillman's interviews with Bernard Shaw on world politics; together with an early draft typescript of an article by Bernard Shaw: "The Anschluss" (Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria in March 1938). The typescripts and several pieces of the retained correspondence have a few notes and annotations by Hillman and other colleagues. A few intermittent nicks and light creasing, several sheets are stapled or have small light rust residue from staples removed at the corners, near fine overall. An important cache of retained materials documenting Bernard Shaw's involvement with Hearst Enterprises from 1933-39, in particular his contributions to newspapers and collaboration with the Hungarian born British film producer and director Gabriel Pascal. Pascal was the first film producer to successfully bring the plays of Bernard Shaw to the screen, and his most successful production was *Pygmalion* in 1938. For example, as noted in a long "confidential" letter to Hillman from October 1937, Pascal gives Hillman a detailed account of his work on the filming of *Pygmalion*, including the option of casting the Hollywood star Marion Davies ("Miss M" who also was Randolph Hearst's mistress), as the lead actress: " I am ready to hold up a definite deal with one of the two young actresses of whom I am making a test next week. I considered your suggestion about Miss M. and I had a long talk with G.B.S., and he agreed with my policy, and he would be very glad if I would bring Miss M. to England and giver her 'Eliza' The only thing which worries me and also G.B.S. is that certainly as a British producer I cannot pay the Hollywood salaries The script of 'Pygmalion' which was written at G.B.S.'s desire by a young Paramount writer, Cecil Lewis, while I was in Hollywood during last summer, will be re-written with G.B.S.'s authorization and agreement by W.P. Lipscombe, the scenario-writer of 'Clive of India' and 'A Tale of Two Cities'. Certainly if Miss M. plays Eliza, I will change the whole supporting cast for her ". As Pascal feared, Davis declined the role in a cable forwarded from Hillman to Pascal: "I admire Shaw immensely and would greatly like to do his Pygmalion but please tell Mr. Pascal my usual terms and conditions are thirty thousand pounds per picture and I cannot afford to change them " Pascal cast the British actress Wendy Hiller as Eliza Doolittle and the film was a financial and critical success, winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay and three more nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress. William Hillman from 1926-31 was a correspondent for Universal Service and Hearst Newspapers, stationed in Paris, Berlin and London. From 1934-39, he was Chief of Staff, foreign correspondent, for Hearst, and was foreign editor for *Colliers* from 1939-40. In 1952 he served as assistant to President Harry S. Truman. In addition to soliciting contributions by Bernard Shaw on the rise of Nazi Germany (1933-39), the archive includes a corrected transcript of an exclusive interview with Bernard Shaw from May 17, 1939, which begins: "London The commentator is George Ber.
