Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. Longman, Green and Co. Third Edition 1896. Hardcover, no dust Jacket. Book Condition: good ++, with the following conditions: covered in maroon cloth-covered boards. Silver titles and publisher logo to front cover. Silver titles and publishers name to spine. Some rubbing and wear to corners, folding and wear to top and bottom of spine. minor wear to edges of spine. Internally tight and sharp. Some foxing to some pages. Lavishly illustrated with b/w full page photographs, and of in-text photographs and line drawings. The book concerns the first archeological research at Great Zimbabwe in 1891, and other ruins of the Monomatapa Empire, though Bent was convinced that the ruins were from an occupying middle eastern people, probably the Phonicians. This interpretation has, of course, been subsequently debunked. But the book provides a fascinating look at an initial excavation at Great Zimbabwe, and how contemporary prejudices about the local peoples informed the conclusions reached by Bent and his colleagues.
