    Portrait of William Laud (1573-1648), a bishop in the Church of England. He was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1633 by Charles I. Laud was a key advocate of Charles I's religious reforms. For this he was arrested in 1640 and executed towards the end of the First English Civil War in January 1645. Engraving on laid paper, sheet size 300 x 174 mm. Engraved by Benoît II Audran after the painting by Adriaen van der Werff (Kralingen 1659 - Rotterdam 1722). This print was published in: Larrey, Isaac de. Histoire d'Angleterre, d'Écosse et d'Irlande. Rotterdam: Reinier Leers, 1697-1713. Benoît II Audran (Paris 1698-1722) was one of the later Audran family members who became an engraver. The Audran family contained numerous painters and engravers, from Charles (1594-1674) and Claude Audran (1597-1675). The family was active around Paris and Lyon. Into the 19th century, members of the family would instruct their children or other family members in the art of engraving. In very good condition, although cropped within platemark. Remains of mounting on the verso.

Benoit Audran II was his nephew and the son of Jean Audran. He was appointed engraver to the king. He was active in Paris and his prints very well respected. Jean-Baptiste Nattier (1678-1726) was A French history painter from Paris. He was the eldest son of Marc Nattier the elder and Marie Courtois. Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a reknown Flemish Baroque painter, who ran a large studio in Antwerp.Condition: Very good, given age. Print attached to carrier. Edges reinforced on rear.
