Se trata de conciliar la presentación de textos clásicos con otros pocos conocidos en nuestra lengua, apuntando a cubrir las principales tendencias vivas en el estudio de los intelectuales. Los textos seleccionados se agrupan en cuatro partes: la primera se refiere a la definición del intelectual, particularmente el intelectual político; la segunda, a la estructura de la vida intelectual; la tercera, a los intelectuales como instrumento de poder y cambio; finalmente, la cuarta parte, la más extensa, está dedicada al análisis del intelectual latinoamericano. El libro no propone una teoría, porque aún no existe; no es tampoco una mera yuxtaposición de trabajos descriptivos.
