Dos de sus cuatro hijos mueren de enfermedades curables, y ella sobrevive apenas a un aborto mal practicado y sufra la explotacion y la humillacion como sirvienta de planta. Sin embargo, Benedita es una luchadora. Organiza a los vecinos de la favela para obtener agua, alcantarillado y electricidad; aprende a leer y a escrebir y se dedica a ensenar a otras mujeres.
