La irrupción en el mundo del diseño, en 1984, de una nueva herramienta -el ordenador Macintosh- supuso un cambio notable no sólo en los métodos de trabajo sino también en las concepciones estéticas, pues posibilitó una serie de usos que abocaron a la exploración de nuevos recursos formales. Llegó a hablarse del MacStyle, un estilo a partir de las posibilidades que ofrecía el Mac y sus programas: tipografías deformadas, letras tridimensionales y/o sombreadas, imágenes superpuestas, borrosas o pixeladas, etc., que definiría la segunda mitad de los años ochenta y una buena parte de la década de los noventa.
